Domestic dispute escalates into standoff in Roscommon County

NESTER TOWNSHIP, MI (WNEM) -

Police responding to a domestic dispute in Roscommon County encountered a much more tense situation that developed into an alleged standoff between officers and a man in Nester Township.

At around 3 p.m. Sunday afternoon, a woman contacted 911 after the man allegedly attempted to hold the woman against her will at her residence, about 5 miles southwest of West Branch.  Police also said the woman claimed the man shot her telephone with a pistol after the woman tried to dial 911.

Officials also said the man made threats of killing anyone who approached the home and also allegedly threatened to kill himself.

The woman was able to make it out of the home safely.

The Roscommon County Sheriffs Office and Emergency Response Team negotiated with the subject for several hours before the man surrendered to police.  The standoff ended at around 10:30 p.m.

The man is lodged in the Roscommon County jail, charged with felonious assault, interfering with a communications device and domestic assault.  Officers said further charges are likely to follow.
