SURPRISE, AZ (CBS5) -
The 52-year-old man who was shot during negotiations with police at a residence near 150th Avenue and Aster Drive has died.
Surprise Police Sgt. Mike Donovan said police responded to the house after reports of a suicidal man with a gun.
When police arrived, officers made contact with Joel Byne who was holding a gun to his head and threatening to take his life, said Donovan.
He said officers attempted to use a less-lethal device to stop Byne from shooting himself or causing injuries to others, but that attempt was not successful.
The man was shot by police and transported to a local area hospital where he died.
The incident is under investigation.
