Federal groups to work on goals for Arizona plant

PHOENIX (AP) -

The U.S. Department ofInterior, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Energy haveagreed to work together on shared goals for the Navajo Generating Station innorthern Arizona.

In the statement, the three federal agenciessaid they'll work together to find ways to produce "clean, affordable andreliable power, affordable and sustainable water supplies, and sustainableeconomic development."

The generating station is a coal-fired powerplant on the Navajo Nation about 12 miles from Grand Canyon National Park.

The 40-year-old plant is partially owned bythe Interior's Bureau of Reclamation. Power from the facility is distributed tocustomers in Arizona, California, and Nevada.

The Sierra Club claims the generatingstation "is Arizona's largest single source of climate-changingpollution." The environmental group wants the plant to transition fromcoal.
