AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
Swainsboro Police are
investigating the city's first homicide of the year. The GBI is also involved, looking
for the person who shot and killed 55 year old Nathaniel Johnson in the
backyard of his home Wednesday night.
"It's very uncommon for us to
have this kind of situation in Swainsboro, Georgia," said Swainsboro Chief
Randy Ellison.
The retired military man had
family and children. Johnson was well liked in the community but lived alone in
his home on Mable Avenue.
Swainsboro Police do not believe
this was a random act. A family member even said someone attempted to rob
Johnson at gunpoint just days prior to his murder.
"He wrestled, got the gun
away from the guy because the guy didn't know how to use it," said victim's
brother David Johnson.
This time, that wasn't the case for Johnson
and now his family wants answers.
"Justice. Who did it, why
did they do it?" said victim's brother Daniel Johnson.
Answers police say may come sooner than later.
"We are on to something as
we speak. We feel good about the information we've gotten and we are hoping
these next 24 hours to name a suspect," said Chief Ellison.
Johnson's family asks if anyone has any information
to contact the Swainsboro Police Department.
