Night of drinking lands Columbus man in jail for rape

COLUMBUS, GA (WTVM) -

A pair of Columbus roommates spent New Year's drinking and partying but on Thursday they were in a courtroom with one accusing the other of rape.

For over a year, they worked, lived, and partied together; however, early Tuesday morning a woman told police she woke up to her best friend on top of her.

Her friend Trenton Joyce, 24, pled not guilty to raping the woman he told police was like a sister to him.

The alleged victim, a 29-year-old woman told police she and Joyce spent New Year's Day drinking and partying.

After leaving a Columbus club they went home and fell asleep on the couch that's when she said he took advantage of her.

"He said he doesn't know what happened. He says they went to the Gold's Lounge club, when they got home they both went to sleep on the couch and when he woke up he was on top of her," Columbus detective Anthony Kimbrough testified. "He got up, he couldn't believe what happened. He said the only thing he could remember was the look on [the victim's] face."

The victim told police she jumped up, got dressed, and went to a friend's house where she called police.

She told police Joyce followed her there and kept apologizing until she told him to leave. The victim was inside the courtroom but she did not testify.

Detectives said Joyce also wrote the victim a letter apologizing to her and her boyfriend.

Joyce is being held in the Muscogee County Jail with no bond.
