PEORIA, AZ (CBS5) -

A Glendale man is in jail on suspicion of stealing a cell phone to raise money to get his vehicle out of impound, police said.

Christopher Lopez, 30, was booked on robbery charges after police said he stole a woman's cell phone Thursday. Officers were able to use the phone's GPS to locate him.

A 20-year-old Peoria woman was waiting at a bus stop near 67th and Peoria avenues when Lopez allegedly snatched the device and then ran off into a nearby neighborhood, police said.

Peoria police said they determined the victim's phone was equipped with an Apple GPS Locator and were able to track the phone's location to the area of 59th and Gardenia avenues in Glendale.

Officers located Lopez, who they said matched the description of the suspect who had stolen the phone.

While talking with Lopez, police sent a signal to the stolen phone, which caused the phone to "scream" from Lopez's pocket. Officers then recovered the stolen phone and Lopez admitted to the robbery.

Lopez said he stole the phone to raise money to get his car out of impound from a drug arrest the day before, police said.
