Should gun owners buy liability insurance?

SPARTANBURG, SC (FOX Carolina) -

When shooters go to a shooting range, the goal is to hit a target. And as gun owners practiced their shots Wednesday at The Firing Line in Spartanburg County, some took aim at a new gun proposal.

David Fleming practices his shot often at the range.

"I want to make sure I don't get caught off guard if I did have to defend myself, I want to know what I'm doing," Fleming said.

According to reports, there are talks about gun owners and if they should be forced to buy liability insurance for their guns.

For example, if an owner's gun is used during a violent crime, a victim or victim's family could get money.

"As long as you're a law abiding citizen, I don't see why you should have to have insurance to carry a gun," Fleming said.

Richard Lovely said gun insurance won't make us safer.

"I guess it's just another way of trying to regulate the gun industry," Lovely said.

He's a co-owner of The Firing Line and said it would be an unfair added expense for gun owners.

"If you have a right to bear arms, you should make it as easy as possible for people to bear arms," Lovely said.

FOX Carolina also talked to Greg Heintz, an agent with State Farm Insurance in Taylors.

"In some cases a homeowner's policy could cover you if you're shot inside a home. But each case would have to be investigated.  However, right now there isn't a specific gun liability policy in place in South Carolina," Heintz said.

And Fleming said as a gun owner, he wants to keep it that way.
