MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -
What started out as an eviction turned into a meth bust in a neighborhood in East Montgomery. It happened in the Coventry subdivision where the homeowner and Montgomery County Sheriff's deputies each got more than they bargained for.
When authorities entered the house they found the residence trashed. The carpets and walls were ruined and there were drug-related clues that they could be dealing with a meth lab.
Dressed in some of the most protective chemical suits on the market, trained narcotics officers remove the largest meth lab uncovered in Montgomery County in the last six months. Officers were seen moving numerous household products used to make meth to a tarp on the home's lawn. They were also seen carrying away a child's swimming pool with lights inside it, also suspected of being used in the operation.
The home owner,"Cynthia",requested only her first name be used. She is now left to pay for the damage to the house. "I am still in shock," she said. "I cannot believe that somebody would do that to a house and not even think twice about someone else's property."
The alleged culprit, 26-year-old John Laken Kenington, was arrested and charged with manufacturing an unlawful substance in the first degree.
Cynthia said she was given assurances by two people that they would pay rent and utilities, but was "lied to right and left."
Sheriff's deputies say the cleanup costs for a meth lab the size of Wednesday's operation can run upwards of $10,000. The Montgomery County Sheriff's Office now has certified narcotics officers who can remove meth labs without any cost to taxpayers.
