Christmas rains slightly boost Lake Thurmond levels

Posted: Updated:

It's been a good week for Lake Thurmond.

The lake has seen extremely low levels for several months before Christmas Eve and Day rains brought some much needed relief.

"When you see these big rainfall events, this will be the time of year when you see the biggest jumps in the lake level," says Lake Thurmond Operations Project Manager Scott Hyatt.

Hyatt says the rains have helped boost the water level, if only just a small bit.

"We've seen the lake come up a little over a foot in the last day," he says. "It'll probably still keep coming up for the next couple days."

After months of drought that has plagued the area, any kind of substantial rain is just what the doctor ordered for Lake Thurmond.

Even with lake levels slightly up, Hyatt suggests it's still a good idea to proceed with caution if you plan on taking out the boat any time soon.

"With the water down, there's a lot of hazards out there," he says. "There's lots of humps, stumps, and snags that are not marked."

While the lake still has a long way to go before it's back where Thurmond officials would like to see it, Hyatt says this week's strong rains have them thinking the lake could be on its way back.

"I am cautiously optimistic," he admits. "Even with below average rainfall, we will come up. But we're going to still need to see significantly above average rainfall before we come all the way up."
