Scratch out that statement about eleven tornadoes. Surveyors with the National Weather Service now say 14 tornadoes are now being confirmed regarding the Christmas day severe weather outbreak that swept across the Southeast.
When the day started, NWS surveyors had 4 confirmed twisters. Then the number jumped to 8, and by the end of the day the total stood at 14.
Surveying continues beyond the 14 confirmed tornadoes that hit Alabama, and the number may climb again.
Surveyors with the Birmingham NWS confirmed three twisters late Thursday evening, each in Lowndes County. The first was an EF-1 in Farmersville. The second was an EF-0 in Mosses and the third was an EF-2 with winds over 120mph just northwest of Hayneville at Bodock Farms.
Surveyors with the Mobile NWS say they've found conclusive evidence of two EF-2 tornadoes in Choctaw County as well as portions of Clarke and Wilcox County. It has also been determined that Washington County saw an EF-1 tornado.
Surveyors say an EF-1 tornado struck Tennile in Pike County around 5:27pm on Dec. 25, 2012. The tornado left a total path 5.36 miles in length and was 300 yards wide.
The tornado actually touched down in extreme northern Dale County along Hwy. 231 near the Pea River. It entered Pike County, and began producing damage along county road 4425 and 4427. The tornado lifted near the intersection of County Road 4427 just north of 4421.
Surveyors say numerous trees were snapped or uprooted with the most significant damage taking place long CR 4425. There, two homes sustained roof damage as did two chicken houses.
A barn lost its roof on CR 4438 and the tin was thrown over a half mile.
Surveys in Crenshaw County are also proving conclusively that two tornadoes struck there. Work on those sites is ongoing, but NWS surveyors are expected to classify a Luverne tornado as an EF-0 or EF-1 and a tornado that hit Patsburg will be an EF-1.
Counties that saw tornadoes that day that are confirmed include Mobile (EF-1 & EF-2), Pike (EF-1 & EF-2), Marengo (two EF-1s), Crenshaw (EF-0/1 & EF-1), Washington (EF-1), Choctaw (EF-2), Clarke/Wilcox (EF-2) and Lowndes (EF-0, EF-1 & EF-2).
