AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -
Augusta drivers can expect traffic delays
these next couple of days. FOX54 spoke to state and local law enforcement about
what drivers can expect.
"Well the holiday period this
year, we are having a lot of heavy traffic. Obviously folks going to and from
to visit their families for Christmas so the traffic flow has increased
significantly," said Ben Rollins, Georgia State Patrol trooper.
Trooper Rollins is just one of
many officers working through the holidays. FOX54 followed the trooper through his
routine routes, watching as he pulled people over and ticketing drivers when
necessary.
However, trooper Rollins isn't
trying to be a "Grinch."
"We just want everyone to
get there and get there safe if they can," said Rollins.
Law enforcement officers are on
the roadways watching for traffic violations like drunk drivers, speeders, and
people not wearing their seat belts.
Richmond County Sheriff deputies
say they've seen many drivers get too distracted.
"Mainly just paying
attention to what's in front of you. When you get near these areas where
traffic is backing up a lot, make sure you leave a safe enough distance from
the vehicle in front of you to be able to stop if traffic starts stopping
quickly," said Cpl. Michael Pletcher.
Advice that could save lives. The
State Patrol is already reporting several crashes since Friday, one that
included a fatality.
Law enforcement will also be on
the look-out for one particular driver this holiday season.
"If you have been drinking, we
definitely suggest you get a ride home or have a designated driver," said Rollins.
Both officers recommend leaving
extra early to prevent any speeding on the roadways.
Traffic is expected to be fairly light Christmas
morning but troopers say will continue to increase through Wednesday.
