Murder victim's family spending Christmas without answers

Posted: Updated:

The wreath is on the door. The home is decorated, and the family is all gathered for the holidays.

But for Tyesha Simmons and her family, something is still missing this Christmas: her brother, Travis Smith, who was murdered in September.

"We miss his laughter, we miss his sarcasm, we miss his joking," Tyesha says. "Walking through the door just feels different, you can tell that presence is missing."

Smith was gunned down inside Ridgeview Manor Apartments in North Augusta on September 29.

Three months later, the family is still left without answers.

"No motive. No suspects. No leads," Tyesha says. It's very heartbreaking, very frustrating."

In September, witnesses told North Augusta Public Safety two black men in hoodies approached Smith and shot him in the abdomen.

Investigators tell Fox 54 they're continuing to look into the case, but have no updates.

It's a disheartening thing for Smith's family to hear, but they hope someone will come forward with information and help investigators.

The family has posted flyers near the apartment complex urging those with information to call police.

"You never know when it could be someone in your family," Tyesha says. "If this happened to you, you would want somebody to come forward. You would want someone to help you."

She says that could help bring the best Christmas gift of all this year: closure for her and her family.

"It'll be a good Christmas gift just knowing justice has been served for Travis," Tyesha says. "We're still fighting for him."

If you have any information, you are asked to call North Augusta Public Safety or Crimestoppers. You can remain anonymous and you may be eligible for up to a $1000 reward.
