LINCOLNTON, GA (WFXG) -

A Lincoln County woman is dead after an accidental fire in her home.

Betty Moss, 64, died after her home on the 1100 block of Murray Jones Circle in Lincolnton caught fire around 8:50 a.m. Saturday.

Moss was home alone at the time of the fire.

State fire investigators say the fire was caused by a space heater located too close to a sofa.

The home was destroyed by the fire. Fire investigators say there were no working smoke detectors inside.

Insurance and Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens is asking everyone to take caution if using space heaters this winter.

"With cold weather in the forecast for the next few days, I encourage all Georgians to keep safety in mind when heating their homes," Hudgens says.
