Aiken County, SC (WFXG) -
After rumors of a shooting threat spread at Midland Valley High School in Graniteville, Aiken County deputies are present on several campuses Friday. Just one week after the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Conn., deputies hope to put parents at ease.
"We don't feel there's any real threat here, but we want to take every precaution so parents know their children are safe," said Capt. Troy Elwell of the Aiken County Sheriff's Office.
Capt. Elwell says a rumor about a note written on a bathroom wall at Midland Valley High read someone was going to shoot up the school Friday. He says deputies, in uniform and plain clothes, are standing guard at Midland Valley High, Silver Bluff High and other schools in the county.
Capt. Elwell says students at Midland Valley feel completely safe, but are more upset that someone would start this rumor after the Newtown, Conn. shooting.
Friday morning a moment of silence was taken across the country in memory of the children and teachers who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary.
