(RNN) - Google did not create a destructively entertaining homage to the supposed Mayan doomsday date of Dec. 21, 2012.
Instead, it used its page to pay respects to the victims of the Newtown, CT, shooting.
The most popular search engine on the web's page added a single green ribbon Friday.
Hover over the ribbon and the caption reads "Remembering those lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School."
There had been rumors Google would have a "Doodle" tribute to the feared end of the world some thought the Mayan calendar predicted. The search engine often uses games or a unique interpretation on its name design for anniversaries of moments in history.
Connecticut Gov. Dan Malloy called for a nationwide moment of silence at
9:30 a.m. ET Friday. In Newtown, churches will ring their bells 26
times in honor of the victims.
A total of 26 people, including 20 children, were killed in the shooting at the elementary school. The shooter also killed his mother and himself.
