Final class of ASU grads receive diplomas at historic graduation

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

It's the final time students will walk down the aisle and across the stage for an Augusta State Graduation.

Nearly four hundred students received their degrees during the last commencement ceremony before ASU merges with Georgia Health Sciences University next month to become Georgia Regents University Augusta.

Those walking across the Christenberry Fieldhouse stage Thursday say being the final graduating class from their school makes an already memorable day even more special.

"It was a lot of work," laughs graduate Brooke Bentley.

"But it's all worth it at the end for this moment," says fellow grad Chiquita Hughes.

The graduates have different majors.

"Curriculum and instruction, EDS program," says Hughes.

"I'm a psychology and an art major," says graduate Maleeha Ahmad.

They have different goals.

"I'm going into the Army," says graduate Kimberly Adkins. "I actually commissioned yesterday from Augusta State, and I'm in the National Guard."

"Possibly a doctorial degree," says Mia Lakes, when asked her future plans.

But all say they're glad their degrees all list the same name- Augusta State University.

"It is what it is. It's a degree," says Adkins. "But I started at Augusta State, so I'm glad to have finished there."

And they say they're glad to be known as the final class of Augusta State.
