Opelika business connects act of kindness to Newtown

OPELIKA, AL (WTVM) -

As a response to the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School last Friday, NBC correspondent Ann Curry had an idea.

This past week, Curry tweeted, "Imagine if everyone could commit to doing one act of kindness for every one of those children killed in Newtown." tagging her tweet, #26acts.

Since then, people all over the world have put Curry's words in action, including a business right here in Opelika.

"We wanted to do something for them. Let them know that people care that our hearts are with them," says Randy Scrunopoli, a manager at Mrs. Story's Dairy Bar.

Scrunopoli and another employee at Opelika's famous Mrs. Story's Dairy Bar, Morgan Cagle, came up with a way to let Newtown know they are in their thoughts, from one small town to another.

"We have the banner here and we're taking donations as well. We're taking gift cards, letters, anything you want to send, and anything you want to give," explains Scrunopoli.

"I've talked to a bunch of people, friends and family that say hey, I want to help out, I want to do something, but I don't know what to do. You don't have to do anything, just come up here, sign a banner, donate, even a quarter is more than enough for us," stated Cagle.

In addition to the banner and donations, the two women are also sewing a quilt for Newtown's Board of Education, stitching the name of each person who was lost and the heroes that sprung into action when called upon.

"We want to send it to them to make them realize that we want them to be remembered," says Cagle.

As a Sunday school teacher to kindergartners herself, Cagle knows the joys a child can bring to your life and feels for the families that were left behind.

"They really do lighten up your life, kids bring so much to the world that we actually don't realize and they make us who we are. They teach us valuable lessons every day," explained Cagle.
