Lawmakers discuss plan to cover budget deficit

HARTFORD, CT(WFSB) -

State lawmakers have gathered for a special session Wednesday night.

Before trying to put together a bipartisan plan to cover a projected $365 million deficit in the current $20 billion budget, they took time to honor those lives lost in the Newtown school shooting.

Adam Lanza had two pistols and a military-style rifle when he entered Sandy Hook Elementary School Friday morning, and in just a matter of minutes, he fired multiple rounds, killing 20 children and six adults. Before the school shooting, he shot his mother four times.

A long moment of silence was observed by legislators before starting the special session.

Several legislators gave emotional speeches including State Rep. DebraLee Hovey, R-112, who represents Newtown, and State Minority Leader John McKinney, who is from Newtown.

Hovey spoke about the courageousness of the people in Newtown and the compassion of Monroe for all the services and aide that they have provided the town.

Many legislators on both sides of the aisle talked about working together and are looking into gun control.

"We have seen things like this happen else in the world," said Gov. Dannel P. Malloy.

He went on to say that there was no one in attendance at the state capital who thought an incident such as the shooting would occur in Connecticut, let alone their own community.

Legislators will also discuss reducing tax benefits for businesses and Medicaid.
