NRA releases a statement on Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting

Posted: Updated:
WASHINGTON, CT (WFSB) -

The National Rifle Association of America released a statement following the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

Adam Lanza, 20, shot and killed his mother as she slept in her bed and then went to the school Friday morning where he proceeded to shoot and kill 20 children, between the ages of 6 and 7, and six adults before shooting himself in the head.

"The National Rifle Association of America is made up of 4 million moms and dads, sons and daughters - and we were shocked, saddened and heartbroken by the news of the horrific and senseless murders in Newtown," the NRA said in a statement Tuesday.

The weapons used in the second-deadliest school shooting in United States history included a Bushmaster AR-15 assault-type weapon with high capacity magazines, a Glock 10 mm and a Sig Sauer 9 mm.

All of them belonged to his mother, Nancy Lanza.

Adam Lanza had visited numerous shooting ranges and he went with his mother, sources said. Investigators have not found any evidence to suggest the visits to the gun ranges were recent.

"Out of respect for the families, and as a matter of common decency, we have given time for mourning, prayer and a full investigation of the facts before commenting," the NRA said in the statement.

The NRA said its is planning on making a contribution to "make sure this never happens again."

A news conference by the NRA is expected to be held in Washington, D.C. on Friday.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are searching all gun shops in Connecticut to see if they have any activity with Nancy and Adam Lanza.

The ATF is still looking for leads in the case when talking to local gun providers.
