Nervous Connecticut students return to class for first time since shooting

NEWTOWN, CT (WFSB) -

Schools across Connecticut, as well as the rest of the nation, have been reviewing security plans and discussing ways to calm fears of children as they return to class for the first time since 20 children and six adults were shot and killed inside a Newtown elementary school.

The town of Monroe said it was preparing the Chalk Hill School for students of Sandy Hook Elementary School, the scene of the second deadliest school shooting in United States history.

The school is expected to be ready later this week in advance of the return of students. That school was closed last year, and crews have been busy working to make sure it's ready for the students' return.

Newtown schools are closed Monday.

Schools around the state are also taking measures to ensure student safety and well being after the shooting in Newtown.

In Ledyard, police will maintain a visible police presence at all schools as students return Monday morning.

Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton said there will be a police officer stationed at every elementary school in the city.

In Middletown, Mayor Daniel Drew issued a release saying there is going to be an increased police presence in and around all Middletown schools for "weeks to come."

In Monroe, a police officer will be present in all schools to reassure staff and students.
