Private Islands of Georgia offer unique vacation in our backyard

Captain Andy Hill knows his way around the waterways surrounding the fishing town on Darien, Ga. The former Wendy's franchisee and businessman has built his own slice of paradise right in the marshes: the Private Islands of Georgia.

"I had both businesses running at once," explained Hill. "So now I'm 100% into the Private Islands of Georgia, and the lodging opportunities we have here."

Captain Andy offered me the chance to explore his literally private islands; among them, a main lodge on Eagle Island, and other developments on neighboring marshfront retreats. They're all available for guests to explore.

"The experience here is unique because on this private island, you spend time with the people that you come with," said Hill.

There is kayaking available on the endless creeks and gullies that snake among the islands. You also have the opportunity to navigate the Intracoastal Waterway via boat, to Sapelo Island. Whether you're into lighthouses, old houses, or just exploring nature aboard Andy's truck: it's all at your fingertips.

"We couldn't be five star," joked Hill. "So we're the world's first five moon. That's no agenda; no clocks; no deadline; just fun."

From dramatic sunsets, to an endless bounty of fresh local seafood, the Private Islands of Georgia are a sensual delight. They're also a one tank trip, right in our backyards.
