Flu hitting CSRA hard earlier than normal

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Doctors say the flu is hitting people in the CSRA hard, and it's happening much earlier than normal.

Flu season typically begins in January, but doctors say patients have been coming down with the flu since as early as October.

While elderly, children, and those with immune disorders are the most vulnerable, doctors say this season's strand has been hitting all people.

They say the best defense in battling the flu is getting your flu shot.

"We do think it kind of tempers the severity when you've had the vaccine," says MedNow Urgent Care of Evans Medical Director Dr. Mark Newton. "A lot of people have been able to avoid it, and we credit the vaccine for most of that."

Doctors also suggest disinfecting common and shared surfaces, such as door knobs and keyboards, as well as regularly washing your hands or using hand sanitizer.
