Truck driver killed after semi plunges off overpass

VERONA, KY (FOX19) -

Traffic on southbound Interstate 71 was down to one lane near Glencoe after a semi-truck plunged over an overpass, killing the driver.

The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m. near mile marker 63.

Kentucky State Police say Johnny Sherard, 54, of Anderson, SC, drove his semi off the right side of the interstate and struck the end of a bridge overpass.

KSP say the tractor trailer became separated and the truck portion landed on Tapering Point Road, below I-71.

The trailer stopped in the south bound lanes of the interstate.

Sherard, who was not wearing a seat belt, was partially ejected and pronounced dead at the scene.

Troopers believe the wet roadway could be a factor in the crash.

Traffic was still slow around 2:45 p.m. as crews worked to clear the highway.

The crash left a crack in the overpass that had to be looked at by the Kentucky State Road Department. They found it hadn't caused any structural damage.

The truck was carrying refrigeration equipment. It was the only vehicle involved in the crash.
