City of Augusta employees under new health insurance plan

Posted: Updated:
AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

City of Augusta employees will be under a new health insurance plan come January 2013.

Wednesday night the Augusta-Richmond County commission denied a bid protest by Aetna subsidiary Meritain Health. Now the city will stick with its current health care provider, Blue Cross Blue Shield of Georgia, under a new plan.

Blue Cross Blue Shield will be a third-party administrator for Augusta's new self-funded plan.

"It appears that Blue Cross Blue Shield as far as leaving this government liable for events and so forth was better than Meritain," said Commissioner Bill Lockett.

Employees will be under the new plan January 1.
