Pediatric burn patients get Christmas shopping experience

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The toy aisles of the Target in Evans were bustling with young children and their parents Tuesday, but it wasn't your typical Christmas rush.

The hustling children were 45 pediatric burn patients from the Joseph M. Still Burn Center, taking part in the 8th Annual Shop with a Doc.

Each child was given a $150 gift card to the store to spend on whatever they wanted.

That meant a shopping cart full of toys and games for seven year old Sianis Grice.

"I got Barbies and other things," she says. "Candy Play-Doh. I don't even know what else there is."

The doctors who organize the event every year say it's a chance to let these children have as typical a Christmas experience as possible.

"This is what normal kids do. Normal kids go shopping with their parents," says JMS Burn Center Director of Pediatric Critical Care Services Dr. Richard Cartie. "To be able to do this, and see them in this environment, it's why we do what we do."
