AG's office reacts to news that Victoryland will reopen

Posted: Updated:
SHORTER, AL (WSFA) -

Milton McGregor is confirming that Victoryland, the gaming facility along Interstate 85 in the Macon County town of Shorter, will reopen very soon. However, McGregor would not give a firm date for the reopening.

Victoryland applied for a liquor license on August 1 and was given approval by the Macon County Commission on November 28. Final approval has not yet been given by the Alabama Beverage Control Board (ABC).

Victoryland, once the largest employer in Macon County, closed in August 2010 to avoid seizure of gaming machines by the state.

The state claims that electronic bingo machines, which were prevalent on the property, are actually illegal slot machines.

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange's office has remained steadfast in its opposition to the machines saying illegal gambling machines will not be allowed in Alabama.

Tuesday afternoon, Strange's office issued this statement:

"Judge Vance's ruling last week in the Lowndes County case emphasized that there is no reasonable argument that so-called electronic bingo machines are legal anywhere in Alabama. Slot machines are illegal in all 67 counties, including Macon County. This office will enforce the rule of law accordingly."

WSFA 12 News will have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
