Artist has questions for airport officials over removed artwork

"Voter Suppression" "Voter Suppression"
ATLANTA (CBS46) -

A Douglas County artist has Tough Questions for Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport officials after his painting was removed from an airport exhibit.

Vincent Sherfield is an up and coming artist with an Affinity for Works that focus on social commentary like his most recent piece called, "Voter Suppression."

"When they look at my work of art, I hope it gives them an opportunity to reflect on where we have been as a people, as a culture, where we have been and how far we have come," said Sherfield.

Sherfield's painting was hanging at the airport as part of an exhibit sponsored by The National Arts Program, but after about a week, he was told it had to come down.

"I got a call that we needed to come pick up the art work because it was causing some controversy. I was informed by the airport personnel that the work was offensive to a couple of passengers," said Sherfield.

Sherfield said airport officials approved the painting before it was displayed, so he doesn't understand why the voices of a few outweighed what he calls, "the voices of the many."

"If you see hundreds of thousands of individuals on a daily basis or a week or a month, and one or two complain, that is a minuscule percentage. It doesn't even register on the Richter scale. Do the math," said Sherfield.

CBS Atlanta News asked airport officials about the decision to remove the painting. A spokesperson with the airport said he was looking into it and didn't have a comment.

"I've had tons and tons of people really embrace the work and loved it and are very discontent that the work has been removed from the airport," said Sherfield.

The National Arts Program exhibit at Hartsfield-Jackson runs through Jan. 4.
