Accused suspect in Aiken officer shooting to face death penalty

AIKEN, SC (WFXG) - The Aiken County Solicitor's Office will seek the death penalty in the case of Stephon Carter. Carter is the man accused in the shooting death of Aiken Public Safety Officer Scotty Richardson.

The request was filed on Friday and served to Carter and his attorney on the same day.

Officer Richardson and another officer, Travis Griffin, pulled Carter over during a traffic stop in December 2011 on Brandt Court.

Both Griffin and Richardson were shot. Richardson was rushed to a hospital with several gunshot wounds. He later died. Griffin's bulletproof vest was credited with saving his life.
