Some Doyline residents chose to stay

DOYLINE, LA (KSLA) -

even after urging from public officials, some residents in Doyline chose to stay.

Hazmat crews started working Saturday at nearby Camp Minden to separate and safely store more than a million pounds of M6 propellant. Officials warn that this process could be dangerous and issued an evacuation notice starting Friday evening.

"Stuff has happened there, we have no clue that stuff was being brought there, we felt safe at that time so today didn't feel too different," Doyline resident Kava Siah. Siah chose not to evacuate her family. "They need to have more inspections out there."

The smokeless powder was found on Monday during an investigation into an October 15th bunker blast on the property of Explo Systems, Inc.

"It's not what we didn't know, I think what's most important is the responsible party… which is Explo and what they did know," says Louisiana State Police Colonel Michael Edmondson.

The company is now under a criminal investigation for not reporting the hazardous material to officials.

Due to the evacuation some residents are finding shelter at the Camp Caney Conference Center and Lake Bistineau State Park.

"When you ask someone to leave their homes, when you ask somebody to leave their businesses, that puts them out and that's not a normalcy," says Louisiana State Police Colonel Michael Edmondson.

Explo Systems, Inc was also responsible for an evacuation that took place back in 2006.

Officials say that the removal and safe storage of the hazardous material is going as planned, and the process may be over by Sunday night.
