The Alabama Crimson Tide has won the Southeastern Conference title. Both teams played hard on the Georgia Dome's turf, but only one team will head south to Miami in 2013.
The Crimson Tide beat the University of Georgia 32-28 in a nail-biter.
Alabama's Eddie Lacy was out front on yards rushing with 181 while T.J. Yeldon had 153. Georgia's Todd Gurley had 122.
Dawgs' quarterback Aaron Murray passed for 265 yards with his longest at 45. Bama's A.J. McCarron fell short of Murray in passing stats at 162. McCarron's longest pass was 45 yards as well. Both QB's were sacked three times during the game.
Georgia had more passing yards while Bama dominated in rushing yards during the game.
Both teams remained scoreless in the first quarter. The Dawgs were on the scoreboard first in the second quarter with a 19-yard pass from Murray to Jay Rome. Bama tied Georgia at 7 with a 42-yard TD run from Eddie Lacy. Bama's Jeremy Shelley kicked a 22-yard field goal before halftime to put the Crimson Tide ahead by 3 going into the locker room.
In the third quarter, Georgia took the pigskin into the end zone twice. Todd Gurley's 3-yard push into the end zone and Alex Ogletree's 55-yard return of a blocked Alabama field goal racked up 14 points for the Dawgs in the third quarter. T.J. Yeldon answered for Bama with a 10-yard run into the end zone adding the extra point. Bama was within three points of tying UGA going into the fourth quarter.
In that final quarter, Eddie Lacy's one-yard run to score a touchdown and Shelley's extra point put Bama back out front with 25-21. UGA answered with a 10-yard run by Gurley to put Georgia ahead one more time 28-25. McCarron connected to Amari Cooper with a 45-yard pass down the left sideline for a touchdown. The extra point put Bama out front 32-28 over the Dawgs.
UGA had two more drives before the clock ran out. The first was three plays with a loss of eight yards while running nearly a minute off the clock. The final drive for Georgia started with 1:08 left in the game. Using several passes down the sidelines and the middle, Murray had his team on the Bama's 5-yard line, but the clock ran out. Georgia lost to Alabama 32-28.
Bama will meet Notre Dame for BCS National Title game on Jan. 7.
Fans packed the dome and the area outside to cheer their favorite team.
Both team had penalties during the nearly four-hour game which was played on CBS Atlanta.
Georgia came into the championship game ranked third while Alabama was ranked second in the nation.
