(RNN) - Black Friday and Cyber Monday allow consumers to rake in the deals for holiday presents as Christmas fast approaches. But the day after those unofficial holidays is #GivingTuesday.
Created by New York's 92nd Street Y and the United Nations Foundation, #GivingTuesday, which always follows the weekend after Thanksgiving, returns to the giving theme of the holiday season by urging citizens to donate to their favorite organizations either monetarily or with ideas on how to benefit others.
Notable organizations and non-profits include Unilever, dosomething.org, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research National and Gap Inc. More than 2,000 organizations are a part of this initiative.
The movement combines social media, cyber donating, and willing corporate donors and charities to support their favorite causes and help those in need. The first #GivingTuesday was in November 2011.
"#GivingTuesday™ is a campaign to create a national day of giving at the start of the annual holiday season. It celebrates and encourages charitable activities that support nonprofit organizations," said the organization's mission statement.
