Eufaula man sentenced 40 years for kidnapping with intent to commit murder

Johnny C. Womack, age 57 of Eufaula, Alabama received a forty year sentence to serve fifteen years in prison and the balance on probation Monday in Quitman County Superior Court. 

Womack was the object of a two-day manhunt by the Quitman County Sheriff's Office, Montgomery, Alabama Police and U. S. Marshalls after he severely beat, choked, stabbed and kidnapped a Georgetown woman on Mandeville Road in Georgetown on August 9, 2011. 

Amazingly the woman escaped that same day from a motel room in Montgomery, Alabama where she was taken and held by Womack.  The female victim went to the hospital for medical treatment after her escape and Quitman County Deputies were notified.  

Deputy Jamie Ming was assigned the case and coordinated the manhunt with Montgomery, Alabama Police and the U. S. Marshall's Office.  On August 11, 2011 Deputy Ming received an anonymous tip that Womack was at a residence in Montgomery, Alabama.  Deputy Ming notified U. S. Marshalls of the tip and he was arrested at the residence without incident. 

Womack waived extradition and was brought back to Quitman County where he was booked and taken to the Miller County Jail.  He has remained in jail there until today awaiting trial.

Womack appeared in Quitman County Court several times for hearings since his arrest.  His case was continued several times awaiting a mental evaluation requested by his attorney.  The evaluation was completed earlier this year with a finding that he could to stand trial. 

Womack appeared in court Monday for a trial by jury but agreed to a plea deal shortly before the trial commenced. 

"I commend Assistant District Attorney Ron Smith and Deputy Sergeant Jamie Ming for their hard work and proficiency in bringing this case to its proper conclusion," stated Sheriff Steve Newton. "This is another example that this Sheriff's Administration has not tolerated and will not tolerate violence against the citizens of Quitman County."
