UPDATED: "I've been studying for this for a long time," laughs Dr. Sandra Carraway about her opportunity to become the next top educator in Columbia County.

Carraway was the named the sole finalist to replace the retiring Dr. Charles Nagle as Columbia Co. Superintendent Monday night.

"We looked at 18 candidates, and to say she was the strongest is without a doubt," says Board of Education Chairman Regina Buccafusco.

Carraway has spent the last 27 years in the Columbia County School System as a teacher, principal, and for the last six years, deputy superintendent.

"I have worked in every area of the school system," Carraway says of her qualifications. "For all of those things put together, I think will help ensure that I can continue providing this school system with the tradition of excellence."

The board went into executive session for about two hours to interview Carraway Monday night.

She was actually one of two candidates scheduled to be interviewed. However, the other withdrew their name from consideration at the last minute.

Carraway says serving under Nagle for the last six years has taught her well about the role. But she says she also plans to do some things a little differently than her predecessor.

"Her first comment in the interview process was, 'You really think you know me, but you don't know me as the leader, as the top leader,'" laughs Buccafusco.

"I would love to see a greater use of technology, interactive technology in classrooms," Carraway says.

There will now be a 14 day waiting period for the board to gather public opinion on the finalist.

The board will vote to approve Carraway as the next superintendent during their next meeting on December 11.

If approved, she will take over on July 1, 2013.
