What to do with leftover Thanksgiving grease

TUCSON, AZ (Tucson News Now) -

As you get ready to cook that turkey, it's also a good time to start thinking about what you're going to do with the leftovers.

We're not talking food. We're talking trash, the grease left behind after your bird is ready to eat. Pouring that grease down the drain could mean a plumber gets an emergency invite to your home.

The plumber would be happy to show up. It could cost you a hefty $200 or more if you clog your drain this holiday weekend.

County officials encourage to feed that leftover fuel into a gas tank, instead of the drain.

Your thanksgiving leftovers can turn into something a lot better than heartburn. Just like all that food can clog those arteries, check out what it can do to your drain pipes at home.

That's what happens if you pour that pot of cooking grease down your kitchen sink. It makes most environmentally conscious people cringe.

"Aaaaaah. What a terrible thing.  It clogs your sewer pipe.  It's smelly.  It can back up in your home which you don't want," said Colleen Crowninshield, Pima Association of Governments, Clean Cities Program.

You can turn these unwanted leftovers into food for your trucks.

"We can use it to make a clean burning bio diesel that can be used in any diesel engine in a vehicle or a generator," she said.

If you happen to clog your drain, not to worry, plumbers will be very happy to take your call and your money.

"I'm thinking its good.  Have my number on your speed dial, I'll be there," said Eric Mortenson, service tech for Roto Rooter.

Black Friday for us is also Black Friday in the plumbing business.

Mortenson says he once had to snake out 20 feet of clogged grease from a residential pipe.

Food for thought?  You can make it a green Thanksgiving and help the environment. Keep the green in your own wallet.  The clean cities program will be setting up several grease collection sites in the area.

"We've collected over 18,000 pounds of grease since we started the program in 2005. That's a lot of grease," Crowinshield said.

Here is where you can take your cooking grease this Friday:

East-O'Reilly Chevrolet, 6160 E. Broadway Blvd. (One block west of Wilmot)

Midtown- Ward 3, 1510 E. Grant Road (Between Vine and Cherry)

Northwest- Pima Vocational High School, 5025 W. Ina Road, A quarter mile west of I-10

South- City of Tucson Water Plant #2, 1102 W. Irvington Road, I-19 exit west on Irvington Road, turn right at first light and it is across from McDonald's.

There are also three year-round grease collection sites:

EDG Fuels - 8939 S. Eisenhower Road,  (M-F) 7 a.m. – 4 p.m.

Mary's Market - 1555 S. Tenth Avenue, (M-F) 6 a.m. – 1 p.m.

Originate Natural Building Materials - 526 N. Ninth Avenue, (T–F) 12 p.m. – 6 p.m., (Sat.) 12 p.m. – 4 p.m.
