Waynesboro residents not happy about tax raises

WAYNESBORO, GA (WFXG) -

New tax raises have residents in Waynesboro upset.

The city council approved tax rate hikes of 3.5% on water, sewage, and solid waste Monday night. They also will raise the millage rate by 1.75 mills in 2013.

They say they're doing this to raise the revenue needed to balance next year's budget.

But residents say it's unfair to lay the burden of the budget on them.

They believe the city needs to look to cut back.

"Our budget is out of control," says Waynesboro resident Leon Bynes. "I think it needs to be looked at over again. And basically, coming down to the point where I think there's a lot of cuts that can be made."

The motion for the tax rates was approved, 5-1.
