Rescue mission prepares to help struggling community for holidays

Posted: Updated:

Andrew Broucher spends his days sorting through piles of clothes and shelves of food; looking after homeless people staying at Garden City Rescue Mission in Augusta.

"We like to try and help as many people as we can because we feel like that's what the Lord would want us to do," said Broucher.

The rescue mission usually shelters 35 homeless people, but with the cold 45 homeless people are now seeking shelter under their roof.

This time of year, most folks focus on family and friends, but Broucher is using his energy to help the homeless.

"I'm actually in here for a drug addiction, I came here searching for a place to get off the streets and they provided me that," said Cody Hall.

After spending months at the rescue mission Hall says he is now free from his addiction and works for them as a volunteer.

While Hall manned the front desk Friday; Broucher prepared some holiday help.

"We're having a clothing giveaway where we're going to give them some clothing, if they need a coat or jacket or pants or something. Then we're going to have the Thanksgiving dinner," Broucher, said.

He hopes the Thanksgiving event planned for next week will give folks more than just a warm meal and clothes.

"Just to see what this place can do for a person's life and how they can make a change. And it's not what we can do but what the gospel can do for somebody's life," said Broucher.

"This will be the first Thanksgiving I've spent with a family in four or five years so it will be wonderful Thanksgiving," Hall, said.

Broucher hopes it will be a Thanksgiving where folks without homes find one.

Their giveaway for the struggling community will be the day before Thanksgiving from 9:30 AM to 11:30 AM and their meal will be from 12 PM to 1:30 PM.
