Don't be surprised if you see a few thousand people running around the state Capitol in their underwear Saturday.
It's all for a good cause.
The fifth annual Phoenix Undy 5000 5K Run/Walk to fight colon cancer will return to the State Capitol District with registration beginning at 7:30 a.m. and the race start set for 9 a.m.
"Last year, we had over 1,300 participants run, which included over 70 colon cancer survivors," said Todd Setter, National Undy 5000 event director. "We know this year will shatter last year's records, and we hope we have tons more survivors, since that's what this event is all about, after all - early detection and surviving!"
The fun event comes with a serious message. In Arizona alone, 970 people die every year from colon cancer. That's 19 Arizonans every week. More Arizonans die from colorectal cancer than in car crashes. (825 people died in traffic collisions in 2011-Source: ADOT)
Instead of the usual race T-shirt, all registered entrants receive underwear boxers to run/walk in as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the area affected by this deadly disease.
The Undy 5000 was created by the Colon Cancer Alliance back in 2008 and stresses the importance of timely colon cancer screenings, early detection and provides valuable information for those already affected by the disease. The proceeds from the event help fund the CCA's patient support and public awareness programs.
