After last week's election, people in 25 states, including Georgia, have filed petitions to peacefully secede from the union. The petitions are on the White House petition website.
The petitions have been signed by people in Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, Montana, New Jersey, New York, Nevada, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Texas.
The petitions, filed by an individual and not by any agent of the government, ask that the states be allowed to withdraw from the United States of America and create their own governments.
Texas has the most signatures so far with more than 41,000.
Georgia's petition, which was filed on Nov. 10 by the user name "Marbury M," has more than 19,000 signatures, and some of the signatures come from people who live outside of Georgia.
But the growing online movement isn't sitting well with everyone.
"We're going back to Sam Houston, we won at the Alamo and now we want to secede? What a ridiculous thing," said Deborah Queen.
Queen, who lives in Silbee, TX, told CBS Atlanta News that she was shocked by the growing petition numbers.
"Anything that is based on fear and hate moves us further away from a solution to being the greatest nation we can be," Queen said.
William Perry, Executive Director for Georgia Common Cause, which is a non-profit, non-partisan lobby group for citizens, called the more than 22,000 calls for Georgia to secede extreme.
"Most voters want to see both sides getting along and they want solutions," Perry said. "They don't want further division."
Perry admitted that in this current political climate, his group is seeing less willingness by elected officials to sit at the negotiating table.
"But it I think people are going to force them to come back together and work on these issues," Perry said.
Queen said she agrees with Perry; she believes it's time for the nation to take a deep breath and work to identify the things that bind Americans together rather than those that divide.
"The whole word synergy means people have to listen to each other and the complexity of the world's problems means you can't hold all the answers," Queen said.
The White House website states that if a petition receives 25,000 signatures in 30 days, the administration will review it and issue a response.
