AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

The Augusta Commission honored local Olympian George Kitchens Thursday night.

Kitchens, a Glenn Hills High School graduate, was a long jumper on the 2012 U.S. Olympic team in London.

Mayor Deke Copenhaver and Mayor Pro Tem Joe Bowles presented Kitchens with a plaque, and thanked him for being an inspiration to young athletes in Augusta.

"The biggest part of my success is actually bringing people and building people up with me," says Kitchens. "To have someone five or ten years from now to do the same thing and say they were inspired by me, that's very fulfilling."

Kitchens is currently training for the 2013 World Championships in Russia and hoping to compete in the 2016 Olympics in Rio De Janeiro.
