PHOENIX (CBS5) -

The Arizona Department of Environmental Quality has issued a health watch for Friday.

The watch includes no open burning and wood-burning fireplace activity in Maricopa County. It includes people and businesses which have burn permits for open burning.

State officials recommend the following steps:

  • Avoid activities that generate dust such as driving on dirt roads.
  • Stabilize loose soils.
  • Stop use of fireplaces and wood stoves.
  • Drive as little as possible
  • Avoid using gas-powered lawn and garden equipment.

Experts said high levels of particulate matter are typically created when the air is especially stagnant.

People with health risks should try to reduce heavy outdoor activity during health watches.
