Sketch of judge in Tucson federal court at Jared Loughner's sentencing.
TUCSON, AZ (CBS5/AP) -
A woman who was shot three times by a gunman at an Arizona political event for then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords has scolded the suspect, staring him down in court while visibly shaking.
Susan Hileman was shot three times when Jared Lee Loughner killed six people and wounded 13 others, including Giffords, in a January 2011 shooting rampage outside a grocery store in Tucson, AZ.
Hileman was among his victims testifying Thursday at a sentencing hearing where the 24-year-old is expected to get life in prison.
Hileman kept glancing back at Loughner as she spoke to the court, and he looked at her. Loughner's parents had their heads down as Hileman said Loughner's parents, college and community had failed Loughner.
Giffords made it through the first victim's speech and then was escorted out of the courtroom. She later returned to the courtroom.
Victims told Loughner he needs to live with what he did and think of the victims every day.
Victim Mavy Stoddard told Loughner, "I forgive you, I do not hate you, I hate the act you did."
Another victim, Pam Simon, also addressed Loughner directly, telling him that she hopes he finds some meaning in each day as he lives in solitude.
Arizona Congressman Ron Barber addressed Loughner, followed by Giffords' husband, Mark Kelly who spoke on her behalf.
Kelly told Loughner, "You may have put a bullet through her head, but you have not put a dent in her spirit and commitment to make the world a better place."
Kelly went on to say, "After today, after this moment, Gabby and I are done thinking about."
Kelly told Loughner his wife struggles to walk, her right arm is paralyzed and she is partially blind.
Loughner's mother Amy could be seen wiping her eyes throughout the morning's hearing.
Loughner told a judge that he will not be speaking at the hearing.
