Opinions clash on immigration reform in Obama's second term

PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Many Arizonans are still wondering what President Barack Obama is going to do about immigration reform now that he's entering his second term.

Depending on who you ask, it has some people worried and others waiting with a lot of anticipation.

In his victory speech, Obama said he'd work in non-partisan fashion his second term.

"I am looking forward to reaching out and working with leaders of both parties to meet the challenges we can only solve together," he said.

Obama said that includes fixing the immigration system, a hot-button topic in Arizona. The president's words have Michelle Dallacroce with Mothers Against Illegal Amnesty a little worried, especially because he issued an executive order that stopped deporting some illegal immigrants earlier this year.

"He's going to pass amnesty. That's pretty much what I think is going to happen. He has nothing to lose now that he was re-elected this second term."

Dellacroce said presidents in their second term seem to be more bold.

Erika Andiola with the DREAM Act Coalition said many people in the Latino community are also holding their breaths to see what he'll do.

"This is not going to come as easy as it sounds, it's going to require us to keep pushing like we did last year. Not only for deferred action, but something permanent," Andiola said.

Polls show that Obama got the majority of the Latino vote and some believe the Republican party needs to change and appeal to them if they want to remain competitive in future elections.

"If they do want to win in the future, if they want a 2016 president then they're going to have to start changing their rhetoric and the way they talk about immigrants," said Andiola

Dallacroce doesn't agree.

"We're all bound by the rule of law, and if we're going to say the Republican Party needs to change, so that it bends they way of not enforcing the law, or letting laws be bent. Then what kind of nation do we really have at this point?"
