PHOENIX (CBS5) -

A person hauling a hot air balloon in a trailer was hospitalized with severe burns after a violent propane explosion at a filling station in north Phoenix.

The person had just finished filling four 7 1/2-gallon propane tanks for the hot air balloon when the 18-foot aluminum trailer mysteriously caught fire just before 11 a.m. at an AM-PM station at 19th Avenue and Rose Garden, according to Scott McDonald of the Phoenix Fire Department.

The fire ignited the four small tanks, which exploded next to a 2,000-gallon propane tank from which they had just been filled, McDonald said.

The fire quickly consumed the trailer and a Chevrolet Suburban that was pulling it.

A 40-year-old man was taken to a Valley burn unit with first-, second-, and third-degree burns, McDonald said.

No other information was immediately available.
