PHOENIX (CBS5) -
A 20-year-old Phoenix man could face a series of felony charges in connection with the beating of a 5-month-old boy and assault on the baby's mother.
Jeshua Rafael Valdez was initially arrested at 8:50 a.m. Tuesday at a hotel on Black Canyon Highway on a misdemeanor warrant for failure to appear and was taken to a police station for questioning about a domestic violence incident on July 6.
A police report stated that Valdez was arguing with his girlfriend in July when it turned physical. He is suspected of grabbing her by the hair, choking her and slapping her several times.
Valdez then grabbed his girlfriend's 5-month-old son off the bed by a leg, held him upside down and threw him face-down on the bed before punching him in the face, according to the report.
The boy was taken to Phoenix Children's Hospital, where he was treated for a split lip, swelling and bruising to his left eye and fractures to a wrist and his left femur, according to the report.
Doctors also determined that the boy's mother had been strangled and assaulted.
Valdez was arrested and booked into jail on suspicion of various charges of kidnapping, child abuse, assault, aggravated assault and threatening and intimidation.
