Roundtree defeats Sanders to become first Black Sheriff of Richmond County

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Richard Roundtree made history last night when he defeated Freddie Sanders to become the first Black Sheriff of Richmond County.

Roundtree gained momentum after winning a closely contested Democratic primary against Scott Peebles.

With 100% precincts reporting, Roundtree garnered 63.50% of the vote, totaling out to 49,389 votes. Sanders finished with 36.50% of the vote, which is 28,395 votes.
