Hualapai seeks bids to pave road to Skywalk

PEACH SPRINGS, AZ (AP) -

The road that leads to the Grand Canyon Skywalk might not be suitable for travel much longer.

The Hualapai Tribe says it expects to bid out a project this month to finish paving Diamond Bar Road.

The old ranch road twists around Joshua trees, dips into a local wash and ends up on the Hualapai reservation, west of Grand Canyon National Park.

Mohave County has maintained the 9-mile unpaved, gravel section using a motor grader and water truck.

The tribe says the paving project should take 15 months once it chooses a contractor. Previous estimates have put the cost at $30 million.

The Skywalk is a horseshoe-shaped glass bridge that extends 70 feet from the canyon's edge on the reservation in northwestern Arizona.
