DEKALB COUNTY, GA (CBS46) -

The parents of the toddler critically injured outside his Winder daycare have a new ray of hope.

On Tuesday, doctors told Bill and Stacy Halstead their 2-year-old son Tripp has a chance at survival.

"Today has definitely been our best day," Stacy Halstead said.

There is a new energy about the Halsteads after they got the good news.

"He's such a little fighter. Today for the first time doctors told us he's on this side of survival," said Stacy Halstead.

The new chance at life came just days after Tripp's parents were told to say their final goodbyes.

Tripp was critically injured after wind brought down a tree branch as he played outside Cribs to Crayons Daycare in Winder. The branch cracked his skull.

Tripp is still in a medically-induced comma at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston.

The news makes the coma more bearable for his parents.

"We're on cloud nine all day. Once he told us that, awesome," Bill Halstead said.

Thousands of well-wishers have followed Tripp's story on Facebook.

The little boy with the big smile has an even bigger reach with more than 40,000 friends.

"It's so nice to see people care. As crazy and as messed up that this world is sometime, people rallied around an innocent 2-year-old boy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time," Bill Halstead said.

The support for Tripp comes in all age groups.

On Tuesday, 25 drawings from young school children were delivered to the hospital.

They are now hanging all around Tripp's room.

"You can tell they're 2 years old. It's just scribble. But it's just so sweet. And we loved opening every one of them," Stacy Halstead said.

Tripp's parents told CBS Atlanta News in the best case scenario, he will have to
stay at the hospital about a month, before going to rehab.
