Romney becomes latest GOP candidate to win Arizona

Posted: Updated:
PHOENIX (CBS5) -

Arizonans on Tuesday voted for Mitt Romney in a state that has a long history of supporting Republican presidential candidates.

Democrats eyeing the presidency generally don't invest heavily in the state, which now has 11 electoral votes. Arizona has been won by Democrats only once since 1948 -- during Bill Clinton's re-election bid in 1996.

Obama poured no resources into the state in 2008 when Arizona Republican John McCain was his opponent. But he opened six campaign offices in Arizona, visited the state earlier this year and targeted the Hispanic vote.

Romney also made a stop in Arizona this year to hold a round-table discussion with Hispanic and community leaders.
