Flag half-staff at Atlanta PD for officers killed in chopper crash

ATLANTA (CBS46) -

Atlanta police are mourning the loss of two officers killed in a tragic helicopter crash.

A flag is flying half-staff outside police headquarters in honor of Officers Richard Halford, 48, and Shawn Smiley, 40.

Atlanta motorcycle Officer G. Wade visited the scene Sunday evening where his two comrades died.

Wade and Halford started with the department together more than 20 years ago.

"Oh, it's heartbreaking. I feel numb as we speak right now," Wade said.

Halford was flying the chopper at the time of the crash.

"We had some good times in the 80s. We had some great times. Real sharp officer. Real sharp dress-wise, the way he went about his job professional-wise," Wade said.

Well-wishers also visited the crash site leaving teddy bears and flowers.

Smiley was the tactical officer on board. He started with the department two years ago. He leaves behind a wife and three young children, ages 5, 7 and 9.

Halford is survived by his former wife and a 21-year-old daughter.

Trust funds have been set up for the families of both officers in the officer's names at Wells Fargo Bank. Deposits can be made starting Monday.
