Bond denied for accused University Hospital shooter

AUGUSTA, GA (WFXG) -

Bond was denied for the man accused of shooting and killing his nephew in University Hospital in October.

Charles Gorrell, 85, hung his head low, while the family of the victim, Tim Grooms, pleaded not to grant Gorrell bond. Groom's family said Gorrell's actions last month were unexpected and there was no way of telling if he would do something like this again.

Hon. Flemming also heard from Gorrell's son, who lives in Columbia, S.C. He offered to take care of his father, ensuring his father would be constantly under surveillance.

After hearing from both sides, Hon. Flemming denied bond, saying Gorrell posed a threat to the community.

Charles Gorrell, the man charged with shooting and killing another man in a room at University Hospital last month is scheduled to be in court this morning at 9am.

You'll remember, Gorrell was visiting his wife, a patient at the hospital when an argument broke out between Gorrell and Tim Grooms, the nephew of Gorrell's wife.

Grooms died immediately at the scene.
